The Jaguar E‑type has undoubtedly made its mark in motoring history. Between the years of 1961 and 1974, more than 70,000 models were produced across Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3. Its design legacy remains influential today as a recognised benchmark for sports cars by manufacturers and enthusiasts alike.

The innate racing DNA of the E‑type meets in a harmonious intersection with exquisite design, making it a profound piece of art to be recognised in its own right. Acquired in 1996, the Jaguar E‑type was one of the first ever cars honoured to enter the Museum of Modern Art’s prestigious collection on permanent display for the world to see.

Eliciting powerful appeal, the E‑type established its own reputation, finding its way to front covers, films and the fingertips of famed admirers effortlessly. Indicative of its desirability, Frank Sinatra once said “I want that car, and I want it now” upon first reveal of the car in 1961. The Jaguar E‑type struck the hearts of the rich and famous even when its price was most accessible. The launch price of the car was £2,250. The model has unsurprisingly maintained its magic throughout its trajectory and continues to compel its drivers in equal measure to its spectators.

Notes to Editors

Unveiled in 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show with two body styles – a sleek 2‑seater coupe and a stylish 2‑seater convertible – and a potent 3.8‑litre inline‑six engine, the E‑type quickly captured the hearts of automotive enthusiasts with its breathtaking design and performance.

Just three years later, Jaguar introduced a significant upgrade to the Series 1 car by fitting the E‑type with a 4.2‑litre inline‑six engine. This enhancement not only increased torque but also delivered a far more refined driving experience.

The Series 2 Jaguar E‑type made its debut in 1968, elevating the Jaguar masterpiece to new heights. With a keen focus on strengthening both performance and safety, this iteration introduced a host of notable changes. It featured larger rear lights and repositioned indicators, as well as an enlarged front grille, enhancing both aesthetics and airflow.

Under the bonnet, the Series 2 retained the powerful 4.2‑litre inline‑six engine, ensuring stimulating performance. Inside, passengers gained upgraded seats and improved heating and ventilation systems, for improved comfort. An optional automatic transmission provided added convenience.

The jewel in the the E‑type's crown however, was the Series 3. Revealed in 1971, the third era brought with it a bold change. At its heart was a formidable V12 engine, boasting a 5.3‑litre capacity and 272hp. This mechanical evolution extended performance and featured in the E‑type until the end of its production in 1974.

Throughout its run, the Jaguar E‑type gained acclaim for its relationship between stunning design and high performance. Special editions, limited runs and aftermarket modifications further diversified the E‑type landscape.
