Jaguar Academy Of Sport Rising Star Update

9 September 2012

September has been a very busy month for the Jaguar Acade

19 October 2011. September has been a very busy month for the Jaguar Academy of Sport Rising Stars who continue to receive valuable support through the Mentoring and Education Programme. The most recent Workshop was held at Leeds Metropolitan University and was hosted by the former World Champion and Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador Jessica Ennis.

2010/11 Rising Star, Tom Britz, a sailor from Hampshire, has decided to team up with the current British Youth Spitfire Champion Rupert White. They have won two competitions so far and have now started a major training schedule in order for them to qualify for the ISAF Youth World 2012 in Dublin.

Sheree Cox, a shooter from Surrey, competed in the Commonwealth Shooting Championships European Division and won silver medal in the Air Rifle match and then finished 3rd in the 3Position event. This was the first time this competition had been held on British soil in 10 years so it was a big medal win for Sheree.

Fellow shooter, Coral Kennerley from Ceredigion, represented Wales at the Commonwealth Shooting Championships European Division. Coral received a silver medal in the pairs competition and then came 4th in the individual match. This was her first international match representing Wales at only the age of 17. Coral is soon to compete in the Welsh Open Championships.

Tennis player Emma Devine from Edinburgh, has been given her first Senior cap for Scotland at the age of 16. She competed in the Home Nations and won three out of her four matches. Emma only requires one more win at Senior WTA level to gain a professional ranking ‑ so this will be her main focus for the next season ahead.

Hannah Greenfrom Oxfordshire, has been selected as a Senior member of the Great Britain Synchronised Swimming Team at the age of just 16, making her the youngest member of the squad. Hannah was ranked number 10 in Britain for Synchronised Swimming and only the top 13 were selected. The top 9 will be going to London next year so Hannah is training hard to secure her place on the team for 2012.

Para‑Cyclist, Crystal Lane from Exeter, won bronze medal in the Para‑cycling World Championships Road Race. This was her first race against this group of athletes and Crystal worked hard with her teammate Sarah Storey who claimed the gold medal.

Rising Star Golfer from Nairn, Kelsey MacDonald, has now finished her 2011 season. Scotland came 4th in the Home Internationals and Kelsey put in a great individual performance. The next season will be busy for the young golfer, as she heads to Argentina in December to represent the R&A team and will then travel to the USA in January for the Orange Blossom Tour. Kelsey then hopes to travel to Spain for various competitions and warm weather training ahead of the Curtis Cup selection in April.

Leonora MacKinnon, a fencer from Berkshire, has recently competed in the UK Schools Games for England where she won gold medal in the team event and bronze in the individual event. Leonora has also competed in the Bristol Senior Open, which is one of her biggest senior opens this year. She fenced well and finished in 7th place, which is a great result for Leonora as she is only in her first year of the Juniors. As it stands, Leonora is ranked 3rd in the UK Juniors and will therefore keep her place within the top 10 in the UK Senior rankings.

Cameron Milne, triathlete from Stirling, has recently competed at Hetton Lyons Country Park near Sunderland, in the final of the British Triathlon Junior Super Series. Going into the race Cameron was in 3rd place and required a podium finish to come at least second in the series. Unfortunately, Cameron finished in 12th place after a really difficult run meaning he was 5th overall in the Series. Cameron now goes into winter training more determined than ever to have a successful upcoming season.

yclist from Lincolnshire, Ali Slater, has won the National Junior Road Race series, which finished with the Tour of Wales. He was also selected to represent Great Britain in the World Junior Road Race Championships.

Our 2010 Rising Stars also continue on their sporting journey and have had some great successes:

Jenny Illidge, a canoeist from Cheshire, has recently competed in the National Marathon Championships. It is Jenny's first year as a Senior which meant she could compete in the Senior race or the U23 race. Jenny chose to race in the Senior competition where she was the youngest by four years. She had a fantastic race and won by approximately 50 seconds, making her the Senior Women's National Champion.

Trampolinist, Sophie Lewis from Surrey, had been selected for this year's World Age Championships in Birmingham. She has also recently competed in the Albacete Cup in Spain where she represented Great Britain in the Senior Ladies. Sophie finished in 3rd place and produced two new personal bests during the competition.

It has been an exciting month for our Rising Stars, many of whom are now going into intensive training ahead of next year's competitions. The Jaguar Academy of Sport looks forward to keeping up with their progress and achievements.
