Dave Brailsford Mentors The Sporting Stars Of The Future

28 October 2011

British Cycling Performance Director and Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador, Dave Brailsford, has provided a mentoring workshop to the Jaguar Academy of Sport Rising Stars at the City of Manchester Stadium.

British Cycling Performance Director and Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador, Dave Brailsford, has provided a mentoring workshop to the Jaguar Academy of Sport Rising Stars at the City of Manchester Stadium.

This is the third workshop the 2011 Rising Stars have received this year, which is delivered by Dame Kelly Holmes Education on behalf of the Academy. Rising Stars have focused on various topics including media training, anti‑doping awareness and coping with injury. Throughout these sessions they have worked with Jaguar Academy of Sport Patrons and Ambassadors including Dame Kelly Holmes, Denise Lewis, Sir Steve Redgrave, Gareth Edwards, Jamie Baulch, Jessica Ennis, Colin Jackson, Dave Roberts and Tim Henman.

The workshop focused on 'building a successful team around you' and Dave was able to pass on his understanding in this area not only to the Rising Stars but also their parents, carers and coaches. Also attending was Team Sky's team psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters, who was able to discuss the psychological aspects of sport and demonstrate how important this area is to succeeding, something that has a proven track record with athletes such as Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Shanaze Reade.

One of the Rising Stars able to benefit from this session was para‑cyclist Crystal Lane. Crystal is a 2011 Rising Star and has recently won bronze at the Para‑Cycling Road World Championships in the C5 Road Race behind teammate Sarah Storey who took gold.

Crystal Lane, Jaguar Academy of Sport Rising Star, commented: 'The Mentoring and Education Programme that I receive through the Jaguar Academy of Sport is amazing. It is so valuable to be able to meet so many successful sports men and women and take on the information they have gained in their sporting journey. These mentoring opportunities will definitely help me on my journey to Rio 2016.'

Dave Brailsford, Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador, commented: 'I believe the Jaguar Academy of Sport is truly unique and I am proud to be a part of it. Workshops like today are so key in an athlete's development within any sport. Hopefully the information myself and Steve have passed on will help the Academy's Rising Stars in their upcoming competitions and lead them to future success.'

The Jaguar Academy of Sport aims to recognise, celebrate and inspire the very best of British sporting talent and success. This is fulfilled through a Bursary Fund and a unique Mentoring and Education Programme delivered through a series of workshops and talent days. Mentoring is key to the Academy and provides all the Rising Stars with the non‑financial support they need in order to be successful and workshops like this one, mean our Rising Stars are able to work with Britain's sporting greats and their heroes who they hope to emulate.
