At the heart of Jaguar’s all-wheel drive system is a transfer case featuring an electronic multi-plate wet clutch, controlled by an advanced electro-hydraulic actuator, and chain drive to the front axle. One of its key advantages is speed: it can shift power from 100% rear to 100% front in just 165 milliseconds, and precise amounts of torque can be transferred in as little as 100 milliseconds. These changes are seamless and completely imperceptible – the only thing a driver will notice is the sure-footed handling in challenging conditions.
All Surface Progress Control
Whether pulling off an icy driveway or towing on wet grass, Jaguar’s unique All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) system gives drivers added confidence on slippery surfaces. ASPC works like a low-speed cruise control, between speeds of 3.6km/h and 30km/h, and uses the brakes in opposition to the throttle so that only very low engine torque is applied to the driven wheels. The result is controlled progress with little or no wheelspin – all the driver has to do is steer.*
Intelligent Driveline Dynamics
The state-of- the-art Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system, developed in-house by Jaguar Land Rover, controls torque distribution and ensures Jaguar’s dynamic rear-wheel- drive handling is retained. IDD monitors the speed and traction at each wheel, steering, suspension and brakes, collecting data 100 times per second. This allows the system to estimate not only the friction between the tyres and the road surface, but also how much of the available grip is being exploited at each contact patch. As a result, IDD is able to pre-empt traction loss instead of reacting to it. Under normal driving conditions, 90% of the power is delivered to the rear wheels. When IDD detects more torque is needed at the front wheels, the system works together with the fast-acting transfer case to move exactly the right amount of torque to maintain traction, resulting in greater stability and composure in all conditions.

Adaptive Surface Response
ASR adapts the throttle mapping, transmission and DSC system according to the type of surface, maximising the available traction and helping the driver to make smooth progress even in the trickiest conditions. ASR automatically changes the setting to suit the road surface, selecting from modes designed for snow and ice, wet tarmac and deep snow/gravel, leaving the driver to concentrate on driving. The transition takes place quickly and seamlessly.
Low Friction Launch
The Low Friction Launch function has been designed for drivers who want to make the most of the vehicle’s traction while operating the throttle themselves. Once activated via the touchscreen, it changes the throttle map so there’s a very progressive response from the engine, enabling the driver to pull away smoothly on low-friction surfaces such as ice or wet grass.*
